The Endowment Fund has created the Monsignor Pierre Hevey Award to recognize individuals who reflect “Excellence in Faith and Community” among the corporate, donor and youth communities. The Award will be presented annually to those who continue the legacy of Monsignor Hevey through support of the faith-based activities and buildings of Ste. Marie, allowing the parish to remain a true Beacon on the Hill to all.
Msgr. Pierre Hevey was the second pastor of Ste Marie Parish, serving from 1882 to 1909. He came to Manchester from his native Quebec to serve the growing community of French-Canadian mill workers.
Msgr. Hevey had an ambitious vision for Ste. Marie and the west side neighborhood rapidly expanding around the church. Among the institutions he helped create to serve the needs of his community were schools, a convent, two orphanages, a nursing home, Notre Dame Hospital (now Catholic Medical Center) and La Caisse Populaire, Ste. Marie (the first credit union in the United States, now St. Mary’s Bank).
During his tenure he oversaw the planning and construction of parish buildings, including the magnificent church in active use today. The eight buildings that form the beautiful campus are recognized as a National and State Historic Site.
Annual awards will be made to outstanding individuals who actively represent the values of faith and service to the community, in the footsteps of Monsignor Hevey.
Corporate – Community leaders who have demonstrated ongoing commitment to improve the lives of members of their organization and of the broader Manchester community, particularly on the city’s west side. Nominations may be suggested to the Endowment Fund Board, who will make the final decision.
